2010 Bankrupties Up 9.4% from 2009

There were 29,989 bankruptcy filings in the state last year, the fourth consecutive year in which the number has increased. The 2010 total was up 9.4 percent from 2009. Among those filing in recent months have been people who have burned through their savings and retirement money, according to an attorney interviewed in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. -
Job Losses Keep Adding to Bankruptcies

There were 23,397 bankruptcy filings in Wisconsin through Sept. 30, an increase from 20,982 at the first three quarters of 2009, as reported in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Among those declaring themselves insolvent are small-business operators and real estate owners who have burned through retirement savings and home equity in the hope that the economy would turn around in time to save them, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
